DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A standoff on Lexington Avenue has ended after police and SWAT received a tip that a suspect was residing in a home there Thursday afternoon.
17-year-old Jaydun Dewberry, a suspect in a shooting that critically injured another 17-year-old, is believed to have fled from police at a Lexington Avenue residence. Police said that he does not pose an active threat to the community and encourage him to turn himself in.
Police responded to Kumler Avenue at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday after an individual called 9-1-1 to report he had been shot. The unidentified victim was located while hiding in an abandoned building and was transported to Miami Valley Hospital in stable condition.
While on scene, witnesses told police the suspect, later identified as Dewberry, fled to a residence on Lexington Avenue. Police arrived to 135 Lexington Avenue at 1:45 p.m., and upon arrival, police say they saw a muzzle flash from a gun and heard gun shots. Police returned fire and struck 32-year-old Jarius Wood. Police applied tourniquets to Wood’s legs and was later transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The officers heard and saw muzzle flash from a firearm from a subject on that porch as they stepped out of the vehicle,” said Lt. Col. Matthew Carper. “This happened very quickly and the officers absolutely have a right to defend themselves.”
Ring Doorbell footage captured the police’s encounter with the individuals as, multiple fled from the porch, including Dewberry. Wood was found to have on his person a holstered .40 caliber handgun and another 9mm handgun lying at his feet. An additional handgun was also located lying on the front porch, along with a spent 9mm shell casing.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation.
