Police release dash-cam of officer-involved shooting

KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – Police in Kettering released video from an officer-involved shooting that happened Thursday night.

In the video, you can see the car being stopped by police and the suspect getting out of the vehicle. You can also hear the officer yelling at the suspect to get on the ground. Later, you hear the officer yell “Drop the gun! I will shoot you!” The altercation and the shooting take place out of view of the camera.

A Kettering Police officer pulled a car over around 8:40pm on Smithville Road near Ewalt Avenue.

According to police, the passenger in the car, 31-year-old Wayne Morgan, got out and ran away. The officer gave chased and a physical confrontation ensued. During this confrontation the officer saw that Morgan had a weapon, Kettering Police Chief Christopher Protsman said Friday.

Morgan broke free from the officer and ran into an alley toward Smithville Road and suddenly turned toward the officer. The officer then fired one shot, striking Morgan in the side.

No one else was injured in the incident. Morgan was taken into custody and officers administered first aid until emergency medics arrived. Morgan was then taken to the hospital.

Police said a weapon was found at the scene.

The driver of the car that was stopped was questioned and released.

Protsman said the car was stopped for a traffic violation.

The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office has approved charges of carrying a concealed weapon, having weapons under disability, improper handling of a weapon in a vehicle, failure to comply and resisting arrest.

The shooting took place in the city of Dayton and is being investigated by the Dayton Police Department. The Kettering Police Professional Standards Unit will conduct the administrative investigation.
