CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) – Centerville police are on the hunt for a porch pirate they believe targeted multiple homes.
Police discovered the suspect’s identity after posting it on Facebook. Now they’re asking for more help, this time to find out where he’s hiding.
A home surveillance camera captured an image of the suspect, identified by police as 23-year-old Tre Schirmer.
Centerville Police Department’s Public Information Officer John Davis says a call came in Friday from Centerville’s Cheltenham area, reporting a suspicious person seen looking in mailboxes in the neighborhood.
Later that day, another call came in reporting a package, stolen off the front porch. The suspect captured on that home’s surveillance video system.
“We have good reason to believe that this isn’t an isolated incident for him. We know of other police departments looking for him, as well. But we’re the first ones to have warrants,” Davis said.
“We feel like he’s probably been moving throughout the area doing similar things so we want to get him picked up so that we can figure out all these things and put the pieces together and put an end to his bad activities.”
The image was posted on the police department’s Facebook page and other social media sites and it wasn’t long before several people came forward with Schirmer’s identity.
Davis says it’s hard to say exactly how big of a problem porch pirates are because many go unreported.
“You know, you call Amazon or whoever the shipper is and they send you a new package,” Davis said. “So we get several reports probably a week of this activity, especially during the holiday. So it’s really hard to say how big the problem is because I think most of it isn’t even reported to us.”
As of right now, Schirmer’s facing a charge of misdemeanor theft but Davis says that could change as the investigation progresses.
