DARKE COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – The Darke County Sheriff’s Office is trying to alert citizens of a telephone scam in the area.

The caller identifies themselves as Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, saying they need to obtain money from the victim for failing to report to jury duty. The number on the caller ID often shows up as a local number.

They may try to demand information about bank accounts or ask the victim to wire money, even threatening arrest for those who refuse to comply.

The Darke County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to know they will never call and attempt to obtain money for failure to show for jury duty or any other court process such as outstanding citations or warrants.

A deputy may call to follow up on investigations or reports but will never ask you for money.

Any citizen who feels they have suffered a monetary loss due to this scam or feel they have compromised their personal identifying information can contact the Darke County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 548-2020 or their local law enforcement agency.
