WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WDTN) — A person died after their vehicle drove into a lake in Wapakoneta Tuesday.
The accident happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday on Wapakoneta-Fisher Road, near U.S. 33 in Auglaize County.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says someone called 9111 to report a vehicle into the lake at Arrowhead Lakes Resort on Cemetery Road.
Troopers responded along with deputies from the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office. First responders went in the water to try and get the driver out of the vehicle. The driver was the only person inside the vehicle.
OSP says the vehicle was submerged in 12-14 feet of water. First responders weren’t able to get the driver out the vehicle.
A towing service removed the vehicle from the water. The person inside died at the scene.
Witnesses told authorities the person inside the vehicle was “slumped over and unresponsive” when the vehicle went into the water.
OSP says the driver was wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash.
The Wapakoneta Fire Department assisted OSP and the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
OSP is not releasing the victim’s identity.
The crash remains under investigation.
