OSP: Slow down and take your time on slushy roads

Local News

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging drivers to be cautious after a number of slide-off crashes this morning and the possibility of more slick spots developing overnight.

“The problem is, obviously, the faster you go, the more damage and the more potential for injury,” says Lt. Geoffrey Freeman.

Lt. Freeman says, thankfully, no major injuries were reported this morning but drivers need to be extremely cautious.

“On a day like today, it can be a challenge. Because not only do you have the deep snow, but then when it starts melting, it gets slushy and then that can also play a factor into people crashing,” he said.

Some good tips to keep in mind when the roads are wet or icy:

  • Increase your following distance
  • Turn your headlights on
  • Get rid of distractions like cell phones
  • Make sure your tires are inflated and your wipers work
  • Slow down

“Even though the posted speed limit could be 55 in places, just because it’s posted 55 doesn’t mean you can drive 55. You have to drive slow enough to maintain control of your vehicle,” Lt. Freeman says.

Temperatures are expected to drop again Wednesday night, which could mean more slick spots on the roads.
