Oakwood postal worker awarded Postmaster General Award for Heroism

OAKWOOD, Ohio (WDTN) – A postal worker was recognized for heroic actions assisting one of his customers on his route.

Friday morning, Bryan Burton, an Oakwood letter carrier for USPS was presented with the Postmaster General Hero Award for immediately rendering first aid to slow the bleeding of a customer who was injured in a seizure.

“Walking into a situation like that is never easy but when you do, basically, you do what you’ve got to do,” said Burton.

Burton said he was just making his rounds on January 9th, when he walked into the Vaporcast vape shop.

He saw the owner on the ground with blood coming out of his head after suffering a seizure and falling.

The owner did not want to go on camera, but said he was unconcious for 90 minutes and had to receive 150 stitches.

“The letter carriers do so much more than just deliver packages and mail to your doorstep,” said John Oross, the National Association of Letter Carriers branch president. “We’re the ones looking out for everyone on the route, we’re the ones that know when something is awry.”

Burton is a military veteran with combat medic training, and immediately rendered first aid to slow the bleeding.

Burton said he believes everyone should want to learn CPR and basic first aid training.

Vaporcast’s owner said he is thankful for Burton’s quick thinking, but Burton humbly said during the presentation he was just in the right place at the right time.

“That’s part of being a mailman but also being a soldier,” said Burton. “If you see somebody in distress, then help them out.”

Vaporcast’s owner said along with the bleeding he had a severe concussion.

He has since been to the doctor and received a clean bill of health.
