NFL, Bengals to honor Dayton history by building turf field at Triangle Park

Local News

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Cincinnati Bengals are coming to Dayton. The team announced it will practice late this summer at Triangle Park.

But first, the park will need to undergo some changes, before history is revisited.

If you didn’t know, Triangle Park was the site of the NFL’s first ever game.

The Dayton Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles 14-0.

“It’s great that the organizations around the country recognized where it started and recognize what came before,” said Marc Katz, a member of Dayton Area Sports History.

The group has lobbied the NFL to pay tribute to the park as the NFL’s 100 anniversary nears in 2020.

The NFL will install a turf field to go with the sign that already lives at Triangle Park. And in the very near future, a former Triangles locker room will be restored at Carillon Historical Park.

“It’s another way for Dayton to get its name out. Like the First Four games that were here last week. Every time you turned on a TV for two days for a game, you saw Dayton,” said Katz.

Dayton History plans to hold an event in 2020 to celebrate the 100th game. Meanwhile, the details surrounding the Bengals practice has not been finalized but will take place in late July or early August.

Immediate details for the new turf development have not be released. The City of Dayton will take over maintenance for the field when it is built.
