Police are investigating after a double shooting leaves one man dead and a woman wounded. Now, some neighbors are ‘on edge’ in Springfield after 2 deadly shootings are reported there in less than a week.
Some neighbors say they’re fearful so they’re now taking extra steps to keep their families safe. While the male shooting victim is dead, the female shooting victim survived. Springfield Police are now trying to piece together what exactly happened.
“We lock this door,” neighbor Jackie Sample said. “And put this screwdriver in to keep anyone out.”
Sample is taking extra measures to keep she and her family safe after learning of the shooting behind her home.
“I fear for the safety,” Sample said. “Of everybody around us.”
Police were called to a duplex on West Clark Street near Amelia Street in Springfield early Saturday morning on a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found one woman in her 30s with a gunshot to the chest and a man dead inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head.
It’s second the deadly shooting in Springfield in less than a week.
“This happening again is a wake-up call,” Sample said. “I feel like Springfield has gone down hill because every time you turn around there is another gunshot or another murder and it’s terrifying because you have to let your kids outside to go to school.”
The woman found at the home was transported to Springfield Regional Hospital and released Monday afternoon. At the scene, she told Police she and her boyfriend had been fighting, but couldn’t remember what happened after the fight or who shot her.
Sample says the couple seemed friendly.
“They seemed rather kind and caring,” Sample said. “And cared about their property. They fixed it up considering it was way worse than it is now.”
As of Monday night, no suspects were in custody. If you have any information about the shooting, you are asked to call Springfield Police at 937-324-7680.
