DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley announced that she is running for governor of Ohio on Monday.

Whaley said the following on Twitter:

I’m running for governor because I’m ready to do something. I’m ready to do something to take on gun violence. To fix a broken economy. To fight corruption and criminality in Columbus. To make Ohio a place we can all be proud of.

In January, Whaley announced that she would not run for re-election for mayor after being in the position since 2013.

“I believe we have turned a corner in Dayton,” said Whaley. “This is the best job I have ever had, but I believe our city can only continue to grow if we give space and opportunity to new leaders and new ideas.”

Prior to becoming mayor, she served two terms on the Dayton City Commission.
