SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) – Pattie DeRosa moved to the Dayton area shortly after a devastating cancer diagnosis.
“I was given six to eight months to live, even if I did chemo treatment, on August 8th of 2017,” DeRosa said the doctors told her when they discovered stage four fallopian tube cancer.
More than a year after the news, the Texas transplant is now in remission, but continues traveling from her Huber Heights home to a cancer center in Illinois for scans and checkups.
She said even though the latest prognosis is good, she’s still regaining strength.
“When you’re fighting, you try to be as strong as you can… but sometimes it’s okay to ask for help,” she explained.
Help arrived when she discovered “Cleaning for a Reason,” a national nonprofit that connects women battling cancer with local businesses agreeing to provide free housecleaning.
Maid Right, a franchise cleaning service based in Springboro, has been volunteering its resources since late 2017. The “Cleaning for a Reason” website lists the business as one of the only in the Miami Valley to partner with the organization.
“They’re in need and it’s something that’s a very simple thing for us,” said Craig Funk, the Maid Right of Dayton owner. “It’s something we do on a day-to-day basis, but it really relieves stress for them as they’re going through a challenging time.”
Partner businesses offer patients two two-hour cleaning session over a several month period. DeRosa said the team assigned to her home thoroughly cleaned any room she needed and even stayed longer than two hours to finish tasks around the house.
On November 1st, DeRosa plans to travel back to Illinois for several tests and scans to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread. She hopes its one of her last hospital stays and said having a clean house makes it easier to put energy into her recovery.
“I don’t have to worry about the little things because the little things are now done,” she said. “I can focus on getting better and getting well.”
