Miami Twp. police investigating fraud at American Memorial Monuments

Local News

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) – Police say the former co-owner of American Memorial Monuments defrauded several customers, some who paid thousands for headstones but never received them.

The co-owner in question no longer works for the company, but police are seeking out any more victims who may have purchased a headstone from them in the past two years.

It is believed that between 30 and 40 people paid for monuments and have yet to received them.

“That person is a Dayton-native and we will eventually present this to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office, likely for theft by deception charges,” says Det. Danielle Schweickart of the Miami Township Police Department.

Detective Schweickart says the current owners are not under investigation and are trying to help identify and assist any victims of this fraud.

“They’ve been actively trying to make it right with their customers. I think it could be an individual basis, depending on what documentation each customer can provide, but I know they’re working very diligently to make it right with their customers,” she said.

Police have been receiving complaints over the past month, but say the fraud dates back two years.

Many of the victims used cash to pay in advance for the headstones, and come from all over the Miami Valley.

They continue to search for customers who made a purchase over the past two years but never received their order.
