MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) – An apartment night fire Christmas night left multiple families displaced, and while crews were responding, a driver crashed into a police cruiser.
Miami Township police released dash cam video from another cruiser that showed up moments after the impact as medics attended to the driver.
Around 8 p.m. Christmas night, Camilo Guerra was inside his apartment at Miamisburg by the Mall enjoying time with his family when he heard a loud bang followed by smoke.
“I was like ‘well that’s probably someone like lighting a firework because it’s Christmas time,’ but when I came outside I didn’t see any lights,” said Guerra.
Instead, the unit next door was on fire but thankfully no one was home and no injuries were reported.
Multiple emergency crews responded and helped block the roadways so firefighters could work.
While parked, Captain John Magill of Miami Township Police said an erratic driver drove through the fire scene, sideswiped an ambulance and crashed into an unoccupied police cruiser.
“He actually backed up and then hit the cruiser again,” said Magill.
Magill said the driver appeared to be intoxicated and became combative with first responders.
Ultimately, they had to use a taser to get him into custody.
“Because of his behavior and his potential state of intoxication and the traffic crash, he was taken to a hospital to be checked by medical personnel,” said Magill. “And while he was at the hospital he assaulted some of the hospital staff.”
Magill said any charges to the driver are pending blood analysis results.
As far as the residents, Guerra said the apartment’s office staff is helping them find a place to stay the next few days.
