MASON, Ohio (WLWT) – A Mason fourth-grader has died a day after she was diagnosed with both influenza and strep throat, the school district said.
Mason City Schools told WLWT in Cincinnati Sable Gibson, a student at Western Row Elementary School, died Wednesday.
School officials said the 10-year-old was diagnosed with strep and the flu early Tuesday morning and went into cardiac arrest later in the afternoon, according to WLWT.
“Our hearts are with the Gibson family during this very difficult time. We also lift up all of Sable’s classmates, teachers and support staff. We will have additional counselors at Western Row tomorrow,” Tracey Carson, the public information officer for Mason City Schools, said in a note to parents.
She said Gibson was a great friend with a big heart, who loved the color pink.
Everyone at the school was invited to wear pink on Thursday to support her family and friends.
Carson also said there will be additional counselors at the school as students and staff grieve.
The school provided this resource for talking to your children about death.
