BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) — A man is behind bars on two counts of murder.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office says 45-year-old James E. Geran was booked into the Butler County Correctional Complex after being released from Miami Valley Hospital.

Geran was being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sheriff Richard Jones says Geran is charged with the murders of 27-year-old Maegan Motter of Middletown and 63-year-old Sharon McCleary from Trenton.

According to Jones, Butler County detectives and Trenton Police were following up on the murder of Motter when they were shot at after knocking on the door of McCleary’s home on Sal Boulevard in Trenton.

The Butler County Regional SWAT Team responded after authorities learned Geran had taken two hostages inside the home.

Authorities negotiated with Geran, who released one hostage before shooting himself.

Geran was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment.

SWAT officers entered the home and found McCleary dead inside.

Jones says Geran is being housed in the Correctional Centers’ medical unit.

Anyone with information pertaining to the deaths of Maegan Motter and Sharon McCleary is asked to call the Butler County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at (513) 785-1251.
