Man indicted in shooting death of 17-year-old girl

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The man suspected of shooting 17-year-old LaShonda Childs to death was indicted Thursday.

Authorities say that 28-year-old Trendell Lamont Goodwin got into an argument with a male and Childs, who had arrived by car on Mumma Avenue.

The argument continued outside the car when Goodwin took out a firearm.

Childs, his ex-girlfriend, proceeded to call 911, gave the dispatcher the address and Goodwin’s name, and told the dispatcher that he was holding a gun to the other male’s head.

She and the male got back into the car and tried to drive away, but Goodwin went to the driver’s side of the vehicle and fired shots into the car.

Childs had been shot in the head.

The male with her drove straight to Grandview Medical Center, where Childs died the next day.

Goodwin was arrested later that evening.

Thursday, the Montgomery County Grand Jury indicted Goodwin for:

  • Two counts of Murder
  • Three counts of Felonious Assault
  • Two counts of Improper Discharge of a Firearm Over Prohibited Premises

All the charges have three-year firearm specifications.

Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. stated, “This 17-year-old victim had posted multiple times on social media about how scared she was of his defendant. She even posted, ‘Domestic violence is real.’ Sadly, the defendant killed her. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic or dating violence, please, please, please get help and call 911. My office’s Victim/Witness Division offers a 24-hour Hotline (937-225-5623) to assist in getting victims the help and safety they need.”

Goodwin is in custody in the Montgomery County Jail, being held on a $1 million bond.

He will be arraigned on October 16.
