DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A much-anticipated project opens to the public in downtown Dayton Thursday night.
The Levitt Pavilion will host its first concert, when Gina Chavez performs a free show at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The new venue is located at Dave Hall Plaza in downtown Dayton.
It’s a project years in the making. Organizers had to raise $5 million to build the pavilion.
The fundraising took nearly two years.
Organizers say the goal is to bring people back to downtown Dayton.
“It’s a gathering place,” Jeff Ireland, Board Chairman for Friends of Levitt Pavilion said. “It’s a place where you can come, regardless of the genre of music, where you’re going to be treated with dignity and respect, where you’re going to have fun, where you can feel that it’s a safe place where you can come with your family.
“And then, while you’re here, maybe you’ll see something else in downtown Dayton that you’ll want to enjoy and take advantage of and just be able to see what is happening in our community.
Organizers say the plan is to host up to 50 free shows at the pavilion each summer.
They hope it will also contribute to the continued growth of the downtown area.
“I hope it helps contribute to that, because there’s a lot of things going on in downtown Dayton,” Ireland said. “Certainly, we’ve seen that down along the river with some apartments and residential housing with the Dragons stadium.”
“This part of downtown has been kind of neglected and we’re hoping it jump starts a lot of activity.”
