As police investigate the disappearance of Cheryl Coker as a homicide, friends say they won’t stop searching until family members have closure.
Coker was last seen October 2, 2018. The Riverside Police Department announced Tuesday that Cheryl’s husband William Coker is the only suspect in the case.
Family members and friends who spoke with 2 NEWS said they were saddened but not surprised by the latest developments in the case.
“Our emotions are a roller coaster,” said Barb Carroll, Cheryl Coker’s sister-in-law, who spoke with 2 NEWS by phone from Florida. “We’re angry. We’re hurt. We’re saddened.”
“Knowing her personally and her family personally and knowing what she was going through, he was the only person to benefit [from] this,” said Charity Leiter, a family friend.
Leiter and Vickie Cyrus, who have known Cheryl and her siblings since they were children, have helped organize searches for Coker in the Riverside area.
“We’re not professionals,” Cyrus said. “We’re moms. We’re neighbors. We’re a community. And we’re just trying to help.”
Leiter said she had feared Coker may have been killed since her disappearance was first reported.
But the searches will continue until Cheryl gets a proper burial, she added.
“The family is hurting,” Leiter said. “And we’re hurting. I just can’t imagine her just being out there. She doesn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve this.”
Community members are planning another search for later this week, Leiter said.
2 NEWS has made several attempts to contact William Coker, and a crew knocked on his door Tuesday, but we have not been able to speak with him.
