Former soccer coach, convicted sex offender sentenced on new charges

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A former soccer coach and convicted sex offender was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to new charges.

Justin Smith entered multiple guilty pleas in late April.

Thursday, a Montgomery County Judge sentenced Smith to eight years that he will serve concurrently with his current 12-year sentence.

“She’s [the judge] looking at the case that was in front of her. She felt eight years was appropriate for that and I think she has to consider that he’s already serving a 12 year sentence,” said Prosecutor Jennifer Weber.

Defense Attorney Adam Arnold adds, “She has the opportunity, if she wanted to, she could have made an example and she could have ran that additional, up to 18 months consecutive to the 12 years he was doing for the other case. She did not.”

Smith fled the state during his original trial in October 2018 for sex offenses with an underage girl.

He is already serving a 12-year prison sentence after being found guilty at his original trial.

Smith’s latest guilty plea came on new charges, stemming from his time on the run during his original trial.

The prosecution has already begun the process of filing an appeal to the ruling.
