DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Five Rivers MetroParks is asking voters to approve a 2-mill levy on the upcoming November ballot - an increase over the existing 1.8 mill levy.
The last levy was passed in 2009 and is set to expire in 2019.
Five Rivers MetroParks Board President Alan Pippenger in order to keep the parks open and running, they need this new levy to pass - and they need the extra .2 mills.
"For a $100,000 home, it's about a $1.50 a month more in property taxes," Pippenger said. "About 80 per cent of funding for MetroParks comes from our property tax levy."
He says the increase is due to losses sustained by MetroParks, over the past decade.
"Through reductions in state funding, and reductions in property values from the great recession," he explained.
Pippenger dubbed MetroParks an important community asset and noted its responsible for more than 16 thousand acres of green space and nature trails across the region.
He said: "With 3.6 million visitors a year, it's the largest attraction in the Dayton area."
A voter I spoke to said additional money for parks is something she would support.
"I come to the park every day for lunch. It's nice to just get away and have that nature connection," Britni Mckinniss said. "I would definitely support a levy."
The last levy was passed by more than 70 per cent of voters.
