WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Big red trucks replaced big yellow school buses outside of Harry Russell Elementary Tuesday.
The West Carrollton Fire Department’s fleet made the trip to serve lunch to students.
“This is much more stressful than fighting fires, but I think we can do it,” joked West Carrollton Firefighter Josh Whitehead.
The crews surprised students by taking the place of their typical lunch servers.
“It was fun and my heart was beating very fast,” second grader Caylee Benning said of the surprise.
While the West Carrollton department served Harry Russell Elementary, the neighboring Moraine Fire Department was also serving lunch at C.F. Holliday Elementary. The firefighters explained community interaction outside of emergencies is important for building trust.
“We understand that we’re role models to these children and we like the opportunity to come in and be with them and talk with them and show them we’re here to help in more ways than one,” Whitehead said.
In April, West Carrollton firefighters also plan to serve lunch at Harold Schnell Elementary and Walter Shade ECC.
