DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A Dayton firefighter was hospitalized as a precaution after battling a house fire late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The fire started at a vacant house on S. Paul Laurence Dunbar Street, near U.S. 35, around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

When crews arrived, they found a large fire at a two-story house.

Fire officials say the house was boarded up, leading crews to battle the fire from the outside.

“It was well involved on the second floor and most of the first floor,” Dayton District Fire Chief Peter Whitby said. “Since it was plackarded with a red and white X, we don’t make entry.”

“That means it has previous damage and is structurally unsound.

One firefighter was taken to Miami Valley Hospital as a precaution after he experienced dizziness.

Fire officials say the fire is suspicious.
