Fire officials say squatters at a vacant house were likely the cause of a fire early Wednesday morning.

Crews responded to reports of smoke at a house at the corner of Emerson and Fairview Avenues just after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When firefighters arrived, they entered the house and found burning trash and a burning couch inside the house.

Crews worked quickly to put out the fire.

Fire officials say the house has been boarded up several times in the past. According to fire officials, it appears squatters may have gotten into the house, likely causing the fire.

The fire is considered suspicious.

No one was hurt.

Fire officials say they called for help from Harrison Township fire crews and off-duty Dayton firefighters due to another fire that required a large response on Five Oaks Avenue earlier in the night.
