Family, friends remember 23-year-old homicide victim at vigil

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - As loved ones continue searching for answers, family and friends gathered Sunday to remember a young man shot to death last week.

Police are still trying to track down the person who fatally shot Damian Chancellor, 23, Tuesday night in an alley behind DJ's Furniture on North Main Street in Dayton.

"He wanted to travel," said Latasha Dia, Chancellor's sister. "He wanted to make his stamp in the world."

Family and friends prayed with balloons and candles in hand at a vigil Sunday. Dia describes her brother as a "vibrant" person with a great sense of humor.

"Making everybody laugh, even in my serious moments," she said. "He was just a very ambituious young gentleman."

Investigators believe the shooting happened during an altercation. According to police, someone reported hearing a threatening statement, followed by a gunshot. A group of people was seen running off, leaving Chancellor behind, police said.

Dia said her family won't stop fighting for justice.

"We will continue until we have justice for Damian," Dia said. "I know that the law enforcement's working very diligently to find us answers that we don't have at the moment, but we do have faith in the justice system."

Police are still investigating the shooting. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 937-222-STOP (7867).
