FAIRBORN, Ohio (WDTN) – Fairborn City Schools said Wednesday it is taking a bold step to attract retired teachers to work in the district.
The district said it wants to pay $150 per day for retired teachers who substitute teach in its schools.
The district said it anticipates the Fairborn Board of Education will approve the pay rate upon the recommendation of Superintendent Gene Lolli at its December board meeting.
The pay rate, if approved, will take effect on January 1, 2019. Retired teachers will need to provide proof of retirement to receive the new rate.
Fairborn Schools says it is believed this will be the highest pay rate in the Miami Valley. Fairborn Schools currently pays substitute teachers a rate of $90 per day.
Fairborn Superintendent Gene Lolli said, “We are starting the process of taking some bold steps to improve instruction and learning in the Fairborn City Schools.” Lolli continued, “One of the areas we want to improve upon is the quality of substitute teachers. We are reaching out to proven, experienced teachers and coming up with an incentive to get them to work for the Fairborn City Schools.”
The Director of Student Services and Certified Personnel, Gary Walker, said the district struggles to find qualified substitutes to fill the need. Walker said this causes some teacher to “double up” their classrooms or use planning time to cover classes.
Walker estimated substitute teachers were utilized for about 3,400 days of instruction district-wide last year.
Retired teachers who are interested in substitute teaching for Fairborn City Schools at any grade or subject should contact the district at 937-878-3961.
