Driver says he heard 10-12 gunshots when bullets hit cars on U.S. 35

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Three cars were damaged by gunfire when someone reportedly pulled out a gun while traveling down U.S. 35 and shot at passing vehicles.

Montgomery County Regional Dispatch tells 2 NEWS it happened on U.S. 35 near Liscum Drive around 4:10 pm.

One 911 caller reported seeing a man leaning out of a car window, firing shots at another vehicle.

No injuries were reported, according to dispatchers. There’s no word of any arrests or suspects.

“I’m on the corner of Liscum and 35,” one of the 911 callers told dispatchers. “And there was a guy shooting out of a car.”

The shooter was reportedly in a car turning onto U.S. 35 westbound from Liscum Drive.

“I just ducked down in my seat, and I was praying,” the caller said. “It was constant as it went by me.”

“Once the shots stopped, I looked around, and I just took off,” said Ricky Schoonover, another 911 caller.

Schoonover, who was heading east on U.S. 35  and was stopped at a red light, said he also ducked down as he heard about 10 to 12 gunshots.

Once he got home, he found a bullethole near the gas tank of his car and another hole on the other side of the vehicle, where it appears the bullet came out.

“I feel fortunate because it was frankly close to the driver’s door, and so it shook me up,” Schoonover said. “I was pretty shaken up. Still am.”

Another witness told 2 NEWS the shooter appeared to be a young man wearing a black sweatshirt hanging out of a driver’s side window of a small silver or gold car. He was firing multiple shots at a car in front of him with what looked like a rifle, she added.

“To have no care to feel like you could just open fire like it’s the wild, wild west, it’s wrong,” Schoonover said. “It’s wrong.”

Schoonover said he is not sure yet how much the repairs to his car will cost.

2 NEWS has reached out to the Dayton Police Department to obtain more information and a better suspect description. We’re still waiting to hear back.

NOTE: The 911 recordings below have been edited to remove any identifying information.
