Driver killed while attempting to pass semi on US 127

DARKE COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – A driver attempting to pass a semi-truck in Greenville was killed Thursday afternoon when he changed lanes and was hit head-on by another semi traveling in the opposite direction.

67-year-old John K. Cecil, of Hamilton, was traveling northbound on US 127 near OH 503 in a red 2003 Ford Ranger, following behind a semi tractor-trailer. He attempted to pass the semi and collided head-on with a red 1989 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer headed southbound, driven by 36-year-old Travis D. Hertel, of Liberty, Indiana.

Cecile was pronounced dead at the scene, while Hertel was treated and released at the scene.

Darke County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Tri-Village Rescue, New Madison Fire, Darke County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team, Ohio State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement, and the Darke County Coroner’s Office all responded to the crash.

Darke County EMA also responded to clean up diesel fuel that had spilled into a ditch along the side of the road.

The crash remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
