DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A man is dead after his car ran off the road and crashed into a Dayton funeral home early Friday morning.
The crash happened just before 3 a.m. Friday at the H.H. Roberts Funeral Home at the corner of S. Gettysburg Avenue and Maywood Avenue.
Police say the driver lost control of his car and crashed into the side of the funeral home. The crash caused heavy damage to the building.
The car also ran over a poll at the corner of S. Gettysburg Avenue and Maywood Avenue and ripped a fire hydrant out of the ground.
Fire crews cut the driver out of the car. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital where he later died, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. The coroner has not released the victim’s identity.
Police say excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash.
S. Gettysburg Avenue was closed between Maywood Avenue and W. Third Street due to the crash. All lanes reopened just after 7 a.m. Friday.
A building inspector was called in to check the structural integrity of the building before the owners would be let inside.
The crash remains under investigation.
