CEDARVILLE, Ohio (WDTN)- The DeWine Famly Ice Cream Social attracted thousands to the home of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Sunday afternoon.
“It’s a chance for people to come and socialize. Really, we had people from all over the state of Ohio,” DeWine said.
The event started back in 1976 when DeWine was a county prosecuting attorney for Green County. During that first social 42 years ago, 150 people showed up. Today that number surpasses 2,500.
“It’s grown throughout the years. Fran[DeWine’s wife] still makes all the pies. She made 202 pies and was baking them for the last day,” he said.
In attendance with DeWine family, friends are also candidates for the upcoming election. That includes the Attorney General’s running mate in his race for governor.
“We were reminiscing over a photo I have of Mike DeWine and my son here when he was two years old. Well now he’s 22 years old and we’re really enjoying another family day out here,” said Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted. Husted is running as Lieutenant Governor.
With the thousands of people who now attend the social event, it takes help from plenty of volunteers like Mary Kate Gallagher.
“There have been people who have been here from the beginning so ( we’re) able to learn and hear stories from the very first ice cream social to see how it’s grown and expanded over the course of time,” Gallagher said.
This year’s ice cream social also showcased republican candidates for the upcoming election. DeWine will face democratic challenger Richard Cordray come November.
