Coroner releases identity of teen who drowned in pond at Lakeside Park

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Search crews have recovered the body of a teenager who disappeared in a pond at Lakeside Park Thursday night.

Crews found the body of 18-year-old Chance Mills around 11:15 a.m. Friday 25 feet under water. The body was found five to six feet from shore in the area where the teen disappeared.

Authorities say the victim was about to graduate from high school.

Mills’ family was at Lakeside Park when his body was recovered.

The search for the missing teen began around 7:30 p.m. Thursday when a call for rescue was made. The caller said an 18-year-old went into the water and did not emerge.

Several children told officials that while they were on the bank of the pond, they saw the teen reaching up from the water, asking for help. A fisherman reported seeing the same thing.

Family at the scene confirmed a young adult family member was missing.

.One neighbor told 2 NEWS reporter that his cousin drowned in the lake back in the 60’s and was never recovered. You can hear from him in the video below.

The Dayton Police Department, Dayton Fire & EMS, Piqua Fire, Box 21 Rescue Squad, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and ODNR all assisted in the search.

Officials began using sonar technology to continue their search once the sun went down Thursday night.

Crews searched for several hours before suspending operations. Authorities returned to Lakeside Park and continued the search around 10 a.m. before finding the teen’s body around 11:15 a.m.
