BROOKVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) – A woman was killed when she was hit by a garbage truck in Brookville late Monday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol tells 2 NEWS the Rumpke garbage truck backed over 27-year-old Cortney M. Jonker as she was crossing the street around 11:20 am near the intersection of W. Westbrook Road and Western Avenue.

Emergency responders initially called for a Careflight helicopter but that request was canceled.

Jonker was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where she died.

“We are still working with authorities to determine all the details surrounding the events that lead to this accident. Our immediate thoughts are with the individuals who were touched by today’s event,” said Randy Broadright, Rumpke area safety manager. “Safety is very important to us and we won’t rest until we determine what happened here today.”

Police did not release any information about the driver of the truck but did say they will do a full inspection of the dump truck itself to determine if it was working properly at the time of the accident.

A witness told OSP that they could see the truck’s lights activated and hear beeping while the vehicle was in reverse.

2 NEWS is working to learn more about this incident and will keep you updated when more information is available.
