Roofers braved snow and cold Monday morning to replace the damaged roof on the Lutz family home. The family was nominated and selected to receive the new roof through the No Roof Left Behind initiative.
The national program partners with local contractors to supply a new roof at no cost to a deserving family.
“This is one less thing to worry about,” said homeowner Lisa Lutz.
In 2011, a hailstorm heavily damaged the Lutz’s roof. Hasty repairs by contractors, often called “storm chasers” for their tendency to travel and offer repair work in the wake of destructive weather, led to a leaky ceiling and interior damage.
“We kept thinking it’s going to get better… we were going to get it replaced,” Lutz explained. “Then with all of the other things going on, it just wasn’t in the cards for us.”
The Lutz family couldn’t immediately afford more repairs while raising six children, including a teenage daughter with Cystic Fibrosis requiring frequent doctor visits and several dozen daily medications.
A coworker familiar with Lutz’s situation nominated the family for No Roof Left Behind.
D&G Roofing and Restoration is the program’s partner for Greene, Warren and Clark counties. The contractor interviewed Lutz and other nominated families and opened the entries for public voting.
This winter, D&G announced the Lutz family as the winners of its inaugural project.
“It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Gerri Howard, co-owner of D&G Roofing and Restoration. “They’ve given so much to the community and it’s important for us to give back to the community as well.”
Lutz said she was amazed to see enough support from friends and neighbors to earn enough votes to win.
“A lot of folks pulled together in the community to help make this possible,” she said. “It’s been kind of overwhelming.”
D&G’s contracting work does not cover the Lutz’s interior damage caused by years with a leaky roof, but the company is collecting money to help fix it. If you’d like to contribute, you can call (937) 802-0031.
