Clark State to host active shooter exercise in downtown Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – Clark State Community College plans to host an active-shooter training exercise at the Brinkman Educational Center in downtown Springfield on Thursday.

Sounds of gun shots, explosions, and other loud noises may be heard in the downtown area between 10 am and 1 pm as part of the exercise.

The simulation is meant to test and evaluate the ability of hospitals and trauma programs to respond to a large influx of patients from a traumatic event, while also testing the operations of law enforcement and EMS, including the use of the Rescue Task Force in responding to a terrorist attack.

“Any time Clark State and the City of Springfield can work together to educate the public and first responders is a win-win situation for all involved,” says Paul Weber, commander of the Clark State Police Academy.

Law enforcement and EMS will participate in the exercise, as will the Mercy Health-Springfield Regional Medical Center.
