CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) — A man is dead after a Centerville resident called police to report an alleged break-in.
According to the Centerville Police Department, law enforcement received a phone call at 4:55 a.m. Thursday to respond to the 9700 block of Sheehan Road in Centerville for a report of a break-in. While the resident was on the phone with dispatch, a shot was reportedly fired.
When officers arrived at the scene, they were met by a man at the front door, who allegedly lived at the residence. That man told police he shot an intruder inside of the home, a release said.
Police then discovered a 36-year-old male lying inside of the front door on the floor. The 36-year-old police discovered had a gunshot wound to the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the man dead on the floor as Joseph Gibson, 36, of Dayton.
Centerville officers also discovered a woman that was unresponsive, but breathing, in the front yard, police say. Authorities said she was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Two children were inside the home when the incident took place. They were not hurt. Besides the man that was pronounced dead and the woman on the lawn, no other injuries for anyone else were reported.
It is not known if the alleged break-in and the woman on the yard are connected. Police tell 2 NEWS they are still investigating.
