Brother of shooting victim speaks out

Miami Valley News

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Lashonda Childs’s older brother is understandably distraught and emotional today. Jaylon Childs says it was his role to protect his little sister, and his family still can’t believe she’s gone. Jaylon says, “I was her older brother, we were real close, from day one.”

Jaylon is still in shock, one day after his younger sister was shot: “It’s just been rough. This came out of nowhere. But we still have to keep going. Life keeps going.”

Lashonda was taken to the hospital Tuesday, and was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning. Police have a suspect in custody. Jaylon says the extended family is banding together after the shooting, trying to take care of each other and make sense of it. He says his sister loved to have fun, and had big plans for her future.

Jaylon says, “Just all the memories we have, from day one. From going to Disney World and Kings Island. Up every day cracking jokes at each other… Everything.”

Lashonda was planning to be a cosmetologist, maybe one day opening her own business. Instead Jaylon is left without his sister, whom he said he took under his wing: “Matter of fact we were just talking about it: she was getting ready to turn 18 Friday, we were talking about her plans.”

WDTN is not releasing the name of the suspect as he awaits formal charges. He is expected to be in court Thursday at 1:45.
