The Sidney Police Department is investigating after a body was found in the Great Miami River near the 500 block of East Court Street.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office in conjunction with local law enforcement authorities has identified the body as Steve N Helton, age 47 of Sidney.

Sergeant Matt Dembski told 2 News a man fishing at the river saw what he believed to be a body. When police arrived they discovered a mostly submerged body close to the shore.

“The coroner was called to the scene. The Sidney Fire Department with their boat were able to recover the Helton’s body.

Preliminary report from the Coroner’s Office indicates that the likely cause of death is due to drowning. No signs of injury were discovered about his body.

Dembski said it is unknown how the body ended up in the river. He said there was no initial evidence of foul play.

Detectives are working the case while the coroner comes back with their report.
