Animal Resource Center offering free adoptions Feb. 16

VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) - VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) - The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center will be giving away free dogs and cats this Saturday.

The shelter is undergoing significant changes after public outcry over the way it operated in the past.

The ARC is at capacity with upwards of 50, larger dogs that need a new home.

"We have a lot of animal advocates who love these animals and want to see them adopted," said Michael Zimmerman, a Public Information Officer for the county.

The ARC is getting a bit of an overhaul after a Team Shelter USA report came out with a laundry list of suggestions for improving operations.

One key issue - the shelter euthanasia rate needed to get lower and more furry friends needed to find a new home.

So far there's been progress. In January 90 percent of intakes found a new home.

"It's not an uncommon thing for us to be at or near capacity. It happens probably a few times a year," said Zimmerman.

The ARC can't say if their new policies are creating capacity issues just yet. They expect answers for that in a few months.

If you come in before Saturday, you can go home with a kitty for $10 or a dog for $20.

"This Saturday, February 16th during our regular hours from 10am-4pm, all adoptions are free. We are able to cover those from donations we have received," said Zimmerman.

The ARC says past events like the one scheduled for Saturday have cleared the shelter. Unfortunately they tend to fill to capacity shortly after.
