AAA: prepare for the worst with emergency roadside kits

Local News

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – AAA is encouraging drivers to prepare an emergency roadside kit, after a number of slide-off crashes Wednesday morning.

AAA Senior Public Affairs Specialist Kara Hitchens says you never know when you might need it.

In the trunk of Hitchens’ car: three bags full of necessary supplies.

“In my gym bag, I keep hats and gloves. I keep water. I keep blankets in here,” she said. “You never know when you will end up on the side of the road, waiting.”

Slide off crashes were a common sight around the Miami Valley after another snowy and rainy morning.

Hitchens says drivers can’t always predict what will happen in conditions like this, but you can prepare.

AAA said in a statement, “more than 40 percent of motorists do not carry an emergency kit in their vehicle.”

Emergency kit should include:

  • Deicer, shovel, ice scraper, sand or kitty litter (for traction)
  • A blanket, extra gloves and hat, heavy coat – if you’re stuck on the road for an extended period of time you’ll need to stay warm, especially if your vehicle is not running
  • Snacks, beverages, etc. – have them packed by the door to take in the morning (so they don’t freeze in the car overnight)
  • A backup power source for the car in case you’re stuck for a while and need to charge your phone

AAA says you should also make sure your windshield wipers and lights are working properly and keep at least a half tank of gas.
