One suspect is in custody in connection to a fatal shooting in Dayton.
According to regional dispatch, police were called to Rick’s Jazz Lab on Lakeview Avenue just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday on reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a man and woman shot inside a vehicle outside of the club.
According to officials, the man died at the scene and the woman died later at Miami Valley Hospital.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 29- year-old Darion Harris and 28- year- old Ashley James, both from Dayton.
The suspect was booked on one count of murder Monday and a second charge is pending.
“It’s devastating,” said Michelle Baker, who lives down the street. “It’s sad that you can’t just go out and have a good time.”
Baker said she used to work as a bartender at Rick’s Jazz Lab a few years ago.
“I’ve had good times here,” Baker said. “It does tend to stay open a little later than it should, which causes problems. That’s when your issues come. You get the younger crowd in here at 2 or 2:30, and people just don’t know how to behave.”
Baker said she didn’t encounter any troubles when she worked at the bar. There were security guards employed when she was a bartender there, she added.
Baker said she believes it’s up to the customers to make sure things stay safe.
“You try to have a neighborhood bar, make it to your cheers, but then you have senseless acts like this that makes it hard to have a good business,” Baker said. “Rick’s a good person. He helps the community.”
