Local Conceal Carry classes fill up fast

VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) – The Miami Valley Shooting Grounds in Vandalia is seeing an increase in gun sales and the number of people signing up for Conceal Carry Weapon (CCW) classes.

On average, about 300 people sign up for classes every month. Store associate, Jeremy Giehl says that’s triple the amount compared to two years ago.

As Giehl spoke with 2 NEWS reporter, Maytal Levi the phone rang dozens of times in the background. Most of the calls were people calling about obtaining their CCW permits, a process that begins with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

“Oh, the phone doesn’t stop ringing,” said Giehl who has worked at the shooting range for five years.

In the wake of the New York bombing that injured 29 people Saturday night, Giehl is expecting gun sales and class intake to soar.

Levi asked, “Why are people more interested in owning firearms now then a couple of years ago?”. He responded, ” Personal protection. Most people are interested in keeping themselves armed and ready for the world we live in today.”

Giehl explains after any mass shooting or terrorist attack, business at the range sees an uptick. Nationally, The FBI processed 2,131,485 background checks for firearms following the Orlando nightclub terror attack in June, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. A 1.87 million increase since May.

In the last 6 years in America the number of CCW permits increased 215-percent since 2007. The most popular firearm of choice is the same weapon most officers carry, a glock, according to Giehl.

Giehl says with the election, holiday and hunting season coming up classes will keep filling up, rapidly. The owner of the range, Dana Tackett says their demographic is changing as well. 40-percent of their customers are women and they hold a ‘Ladies Day’ every Wednesday, which includes training and shooting.

On Monday, the range signed up 10 people for CCW classes, Giehl considers that a slow day.
