Lindy’s Bakery a recipe for success with homeless youth

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A recent move to a new location has a company doubling its size in Dayton.

Lindy’s Bakery moved from its former location on Wayne Avenue to a building on Patterson Boulevard.

“We were at capacity. Over capacity,” Linda Kramer, Daybreak CEO added, “It got to the point where to get our product out, the freight trucks couldn’t even get to our site.”

Last year, Kramer says they hired 46 youth; however, the new facility should be able to double output and their workforce.

The bakery is a part of Daybreak–an organization that gives homeless youth a second chance.

“Some kids have been living on the streets. Some kids have been living with friends and family before they came to us. They all have a different story,” he said.

Cheree Snowden, a volunteer at Lindy’s Bakery, says there was a time when she was homeless.

“I wasn’t really stable at all. I didn’t know couch surfing, going house to house, staying a few nights at a friends house was considered homelessness,” she said.

It’s her second stint with the company. Snowden now trains employees on procedures to follow when baking the dog treats.

“I like to help other people and teach them what I know,” she said.

The young adults work at Lindy’s Bakery for three to six months, typically as a transitional job.

“To learn those soft skills that employers are looking for so when they do secure employment they can maintain it,” Kramer told 2 NEWS.

The finished product–one of ten types of dog treats. Kramer says their products have gone national.

“Starting anything new can be scary. I’m always about making someone feel comfortable,” Snowden added, “Teaching them like hey, it’s okay. Relax. We’re just cutting dough. If you make a mistake you can always start over.”

A fresh start… proving the heart can feel at home — with the right ingredients.
