SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – Clark County could be critical to the outcome of the presidential election.  It played host to two major nominees in the last two weeks and is receiving lots of attention this election cycle.

Both Donald Trump and Tim Kaine made Springfield a campaign stop in battle ground Ohio with less than a month to go to the general election.

There are historically red counties and blue counties across the state, and then there’s Clark County, which is purple.

“Clark County is what you call a swing county.  It bounces between republicans and democrat and we’re one of the most swing counties and have been for the last 20 years in the state of Ohio,” Clark County Commissioner John Detrick said.

A swing county within a swing state, where the margin of victory in the 2012 presidential race was 523 votes out of the 64,301 ballots cast.

“We have business people and we have labor force and both sides are via very heavily to gain this county because as we go we will be one of the consensus county that they watch on Election Day to see how we lean,” Detrick said.

The county has also been steadily reestablishing itself economically by creating jobs, new developments and revitalizing the downtown area in Springfield.

“We feel honored to have had everybody coming here and we hope it continues,” Detrick said.

With 8,000 voters packing the Clark County Fairground for the Trump rally Thursday, Detrick said there could be more candidates looking at Springfield as a potential campaign stop.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see somebody from the democratic side here in the last 11 days. It was a very enthusiastic crowd yesterday and some of them waited 7-8 hours just to get a glimpse of Trump,” Detrick said.

Clark County Board of Elections said they’ve had 16,580 early voters, including absentee ballots so far.
