SHOW LOW, AZ (WCMH) — Surveillance video of a dog with a “heart of gold” is going viral after it showed him saving his best friend from drowning in a swimming pool.

Laurie Becerra says her husband noticed one of their dogs, named Smokey, was all wet. So he went to check their surveillance camera to see what happened.

Becerra, who posted the video to Facebook, says Smokey can’t swim very well, and the video shows him paddling to the edge of the pool struggling to stay afloat. But their other dog, named Remus, quickly went to work. You see him try multiple times to pull his friend out of the water.

Finally, Remus jumps in himself, swims under his friend, and uses his own body to push Smokey back onto dry land. Smokey then shakes himself off, and Remus jumps out to go play with his buddy.

Neither one of the dogs were hurt.

“When we saw the footage we were amazed and our hearts filled with joy,” a friend of Becerra told The Dodo. “My best friend cried when we sent her the video. She says he’s a certified lifeguard now.”

Becerra wrote on Facebook that her husband had stepped inside the house for a few minutes and the dogs must have broken through a fence meant to keep them away from the water. She added that they “play around pool all the time with no incidence,” but she’s now ordering Smokey a life vest just to be safe.
