Driver arrested after idling car stolen

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A driver was arrested after police say he stole an idling car.

UD, Dayton, and Oakwood police responded to the area of Brown and Caldwell streets around 10 a.m. Tuesday after a stolen car was spotted in the area.

According to the Montgomery County Jail, Jeremy Murphy, 24, was arrested in the 1600 block of Brown Street. He faces charges of receiving stolen property.

Maria Ramirez said she was getting ready to leave her Hawker Street home for a class at Wright State University Monday around 8:30 a.m. when she decided to start her car.

“I went to turn on my car in the morning, which I never do. I just decided to do it one day, and I walked back inside super fast to get my bookbag and the next thing you know, my mom hears somebody pull off with my car,” said Ramirez.

She immediately called 911 and filed a report with police.

Tuesday morning, police pursued the car near UD’s campus and arrested Murphy and returned the car to Ramirez.

Police warn you should never leave your car idling. They said that makes you a prime target for thieves.

“Don’t warm up your car before you leave. It’s bettter to go in and stay in there with your car. There you will know that your car is safe,” said Ramirez.
