DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A mother is in jail Tuesday awaiting formal charges after her daughter allegedly alerted family about the mother’s drug use by taking a picture of the illicit materials on Sunday.
The 13-year-old girl was living at the house on the 1400 block of Valley Street in Dayton with her nine-year-old sister, according to a Dayton police report.
The mother’s boyfriend was also living at the house with his two sons, ages 12 and 11.
The 13-year-old girl reportedly took a picture of “a white plate with a plastic bag filled with a white powder and razor sitting on the plate. The razor had white residue on the razor’s edge. Next to the plate was a metal crack pipe with a burnt end along with a cut straw. Also in the picture was a black knife,” the police report reads. The officer then wrote that he recognized these materials as those to “smoke, cut, snort cocaine and or crack.”
The daughter reportedly sent the photo to her father, who sent the picture to law enforcement.
When police arrived at the house, they told the mother about the nature of the picture and that they wanted to speak with the girl who took the picture for verification of its validity, according to the report.
The girl confirmed to police that the picture was real, according to the report. It was at that time that police asked the mother for consent to search the house, which the mother then agreed to.
Once inside, police found drug paraphernalia in the dresser by the mother’s side of the bed. Once police found the two crack pipes, a needle and other materials, the woman told police to stop searching the house, according to the report.
The mother was placed under arrest for child endangering, drug instruments and paraphernalia. Officials reportedly worked together to put the children in the care of family members.
While being placed into custody, police reportedly asked the woman to empty the pockets of her coat. There, she attempted to hide an empty gel cap, which can be used to hold small amounts of drugs, according to the police report.
When police questioned her about the item, she reportedly claimed that the coat wasn’t hers.
The woman is currently in the Montgomery County Jail awaiting formal charges. The mother’s boyfriend was issued a summons for child endangering, drug instruments and paraphernalia.
