DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) –  The Department of Justice announced Tuesday a Dayton man was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for distributing child pornography in 2012.

Demian Pina, 35 was sentenced in the Southern District of Ohio and, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman, had been under federal investigation for sharing child pornography as far back as 2010.

Pina was found guilty after a four-day trial in June 2015.READ MORE:Dayton man guilty of distributing child pornography

Testimony and evidence presented by the government during the trial showed that Pina was making child pornography images and videos available through a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Many of the images and video files depicted graphic child sex abuse.

“The victims in these matters are children, who lack the ability, power and strength to protect themselves from harm,” Acting U.S. Attorney Glassman said. “They are often abused by people they trust the most: a parent, a family member, a trusted friend. People who distribute child pornography ensure their abuse lives on by trading the images of the worst moments of their young lives.”

Law enforcement began investigating Pina in 2010, searched his home and seized computer items in 2011. The DOJ says that while that investigation was underway, Pina bought more computers and continued distributing child pornography.

Pina was arrested after a grand jury indicted him in 2014. He has been in custody since his arrest. Pina will be under court supervision for 20 years after completion of his prison term.
