DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The father of Takoda Collins pleaded guilty Wednesday to murdering his 10-year-old son in December 2019.
Al-Mutahan McLean is facing a sentence of life in prison, with a minimum of 41- to 51-years. He is being charged with one count of murder by way of felonious assault, rape by force, kidnapping and three counts of child endangerment.
McLean plead guilty to the one count of manslaughter and the three counts of child endangerment.
“McLean was the primary abuser of this child, he beat him on the day of his death, rape occurred on the day of his death and it was brutal and vicious,” said Lynda Dodd, of the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
Amanda Hinze, McLean’s girlfriend, also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and multiple counts of child endangerment related to her involvement in the acts of abuse and torture that contributed to the death of Takoda. She faces a minimum sentence of up to 30-years.
“She was every part of complicit which means to aid, to abet and to assist,” Dodd said. “Without her spurring him on, without her participating and when Takoda should be punished and abused, it wouldn’t have happened.”
Prosecution said today’s plea agreements might finally close the chapter in 10-year-old Takoda Collin’s death. They believe his life was filled with darkness. Court documents state the boy was locked in an attic and abused daily over several years. Then moments before his death, detectives believe he was held underwater — close to drowning.
“He didn’t find peace in life, we’re hopeful this will find him peace in his death,” said Dodd.
The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office says they’re relieved to see both defendants behind bars.
“Our goal through the investigation and prosecution is to seek truth and seek justice for the victims, these two belong incarcerated,” said Dodd.
Both McLean and Hinze were arraigned on July 8, 2020, and were held on a $1 million bond. McLean’s sentencing hearing has been set for Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
