UNION, Ohio (WDTN) – Days after two family members were tragically killed in a car accident, the Ellis family is finds comfort from their community.
12-year-old Gabby Ellis of Union and her 69-year-old grandmother, Lois Ellis died on their way to a wrestling match when their car collided with another in Miami county, Sunday morning.
“Sometimes we cry, sometimes we feel happy,” said Gabby’s 8-year-old brother, Gavin Ellis.
His Christmas stocking hangs next to hers on their families mantle.
“She was the best sister in the world. She loved me so much and she cheered me up when I was down and she is forever in our hearts,” he said.
The same goes for his grandmother, Lois.
“She always was with us and she was one of the people we know the most,” Gavin said.
The Ellis’ have a huge support group. Friends and family filled their house Thursday night. As did a few of Gabby’s, Morton Middle School classmates.
“Everybody loved her, there was no flaw that she had,” said classmate Lilian Seldon.
Abigail Howe, a family friend and neighbor said Gabby was her go-to babysitter, and calls her the most amazing 12-year-old-you could meet.
“She’s the type of girl you hope your own kids grow up to be like,” she said.
Howe helped set up an online memorial fund for Gabby which has exceeded $23,000 but the compassion in the community doesn’t stop there.
Thursday night, First Grace Brethren Church in Vandalia held its annual Christmas concert gave all of its donations to Gabby’s memorial fund.
It’s a church the Ellis’ don’t belong to, but were welcomed with open arms and sat in the front row.
“We told them they didn’t have to be but they really wanted to be and we’re hoping tonight that it will be a place of hope,” said Pastor Bruce Jackson.
The visitation and funeral for Lois Ellis Visitation will be held on Friday, December 16 from 10 am – 12 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4104 Needmore Road. Her funeral begins at noon.
Visitation for Gabby will be held from 11:30 am – 4:00 pm on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at First Baptist Church Vandalia, 140 Elva Court, followed by the funeral service at 4:00 pm.
