Burglars douse elderly dog with Drano during break-in

HAMTRAMCK, MI (WCMH) – A dog owner in Michigan says thieves doused her elderly dog with Drano and beat it with a broom during a break-in.

The burglary happened Friday at a home in Hamtranck, Michigan.

Owner Sarah Birkel tells WXYZ she returned home to find her house ransacked. Then she noticed her 14-year-old dog Abbey was limping and smelled like bleach. That’s when she realized there was an empty bottle of Drano nearby.

“It looked like they tried to kill her,” Sarah Birkel told WXYZ. “If the Drano wasn’t back there, would they have taken a knife and slit her throat and stabbed her?  Would they have done that?  They probably would have done that – all because she just barked.”GO FUND ME PAGE HERE

Birkel also suspects the dog was beaten with a broom, which was found broken nearby.

Abbey was rushed to a veterinarian, where she is getting around the clock care.

Detroit Dog Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the person who assaulted the dog.
