49 dead after shootings at New Zealand mosques

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – New Zealand is still reeling from mass shootings at two mosques that left 49 people dead. Dr. Glen Duerr, Professor of International Studies at Cedarville University, joined 2 NEWS Friday to talk about the tragedy.

New Zealand is generally considered one of the safest countries in the world. So safe, that many police officers don’t even carry guns.

“This is a small and tight-knit country, a country of five million people, and this attack occurred in Christchurch, in the third largest city, at two different mosques. Really, just, a detrimental death toll, very difficult waking up to these scenes,” he said.

As if the murders were not tragic enough, the gunman wore a GoPro camera throughout the whole massacre and streamed it on Facebook Live.

“In a way it’s an era of ‘Selfie Terrorism,’ and so it has all kinds of very detrimental repercussions possibly. The terrorist wrote a 74 page manifesto noting his problems with society, what he viewed in terms of immigration. Certainly, this is a form of dissident terrorism carried out by a white nationalist and really just a very difficult situation in New Zealand,” he said.
